Morse H. Coffin was born in Roxbury, N.Y., September 20, 1836. At the age of 21 he was began managing his father's farm in Illinois, but in 1859 he crossed the plains with two friends and arrived in Boulder on July 18th. He first whip-sawed lumber for Low, Goss & Pell, providing the lumber for the first frame house built in Boulder County (built by H.C. Norton).
